High-end ski gear stolen in burglaries

BRECKENRIDGE – Burglars stole an estimated $6,662 worth of merchandise from Mountain Outfitters on Ridge Street in two nights during the past week, according to a Breckenridge Police Department report made available Friday.

It appears the suspect broke the back window to gain entry the first time. The burglaries occurred Feb. 14 and 17.

“Even with the alarm going off, they got in again,” store owner Chris Tennal said Friday.

It’s uncertain whether the same burglars broke in both times.

The cash register and computers were left undisturbed, but items taken include a $1,230 pair of Kastle skis and a Venture splitboard. The items were likely put in large bags that are sold at the store.

“They knew kind of where things were,” Tennal said of the burglars, adding that the merchandise is “pretty rare, high-end stuff.”

Police checked the store’s broken window for trace fibers or blood but found none. Weather conditions covered any footprints left by the burglars and no distinguishable fingerprints were found near the locations of stolen items, according to the police report.

Tennal said he has since “beefed up” security at the store. He said the store’s only other break-in occurred in the early 1990s under previous ownership.

Some of the stolen items and their retail prices are listed above; it’s possible more may have been taken. Anyone with potential leads is encouraged to call Summit County Crime Stoppers at 1-866-453-STOP.
