High school parents seek scholarship money

SUMMIT COUNTY – Area businesses and professionals interested in supporting higher education for Summit High School students – the school’s Parent-Teacher-Student Organization would like to hear from you.

The re-organized PTSO is soliciting donations for scholarships it hopes to award at the end of March.

“Many deserving students go unrecognized,” treasurer Robin Auldridge, a high school parent, wrote to 580 professionals and companies in a letter. “Given the current state of the economy, many of our students’ families are unable to meet their tuition needs.”

Auldridge said the group – which involves leadership students, in addition to parents – hopes to award at least six $1,000 scholarships. A committee will review student applications looking for academic achievement and community service.

Auldridge also said the group’s second goal is an award system for teachers. With future money collections, the group plans to buy supplies and materials for teachers.

“We’re going to ask them for sort-of wish lists,” Auldridge said. “It will be for things that aren’t covered in the school budget. And we hope that will encourage teachers to get more involved in our organization.”

Auldridge said the group is applying for 501(c)(3) nonprofit status, and the donations would be tax deductible. The group hopes for financial sponsorship at $50, $100 and $500-plus levels, as well as in-kind donations of goods or services.

Donations can be sent to Summit High School PTSO, c/o Robin Auldridge, 863 Summit Drive, Dillon, CO 80435. Contact Auldridge at (970) 668-0176.
