Hiker dies on Conundrum Creek Trail near Aspen, Pitkin County officials say

A hiker who was reported in distress late Thursday died overnight on the Conundrum Creek Trail, the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Friday morning.

The sheriff’s office received a report about 10:45 p.m. Thursday about a hiker on Conundrum Creek Trail who was severely ill and in need of immediate medical attention, according to the release.

Mountain Rescue Aspen was dispatched on foot and by helicopter to try to locate the hiker. When the rescue teams made contact with the hiker before dawn, it was discovered that the hiker had died, the sheriff’s office statement said. No further information about the hiker was released.

The body was taken from the scene via helicopter without incident. According to the statement, Mountain Rescue Aspen members currently remain in the field working to retrieve gear and equipment from the scene.

Mountain Rescue Aspen, Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, Careflight and Flight For Life all helped with the completion of this incident.
