Hiker stuck atop Quandary

BOB BERWYNsummit daily news

SUMMIT COUNTY – Search and Rescue crews from Summit County, Vail and Denver converged on Quandary Peak Sunday afternoon to rescue an injured hiker from near the summit of the 14,255-foot mountain. The victim, described as a 65-year-old male who lives near the base of Quandary, suffered a shoulder injury, rib injuries and a suspected broken leg in a fall from near the summit down a south-facing gully in mixed rock and snow conditions, according to Dan Burnett of the Summit County Rescue Group.Burnett said about 20 to 25 rescue workers were on the mountain by 6 p.m. Sunday, and he expected the effort to continue at least through midnight, possibly longer. The injured hiker was with a partner, and rescue workers had been able to stay in contact with the man via a “talk-about” radio. Both men are experienced hikers with plenty of big-mountain summit experience, according to Burnett, who said they had the needed emergency gear to make sure they could stay warm until help arrived.Burnett said the rescue effort was slowed by weather.”We were pinned down twice by lighting. And it started snowing so hard you couldn’t see 6 feet,” Burnett said. Snow conditions were tricky with avalanche hazards suspected in wet, rotten snow, he added. Burnett said he believed the man sustained the injuries when he slid down a dangerous gully from near the summit of Quandary – the same gully that claimed a victim in a snow slide this winter.
