The Summit County Sheriff’s Office is seeking witnesses who may have seen a skier collision Tuesday, Jan. 2, that injured two visitors from California, one of whom suffered serious injuries.

The crash occurred between 12:30-12:45 p.m. near the intersection of Blackjack and Prospector ski trails and involved a father and daughter visiting from California, the sheriff’s office said in a news release the day after the incident.

“This catastrophic collision, resulting in devastating injuries, evolved into a criminal event once the unidentified person fled the scene without identifying himself or seeking aid,” Summit County Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons said in the release.

As the father and daughter exited Blackjack Trail, an unidentified man on a ski bike descended from behind, colliding with the daughter, then the father, the release states. The father sustained serious bodily injuries and is in critical condition at a Denver area hospital, according to the sheriff’s office. The daughter also reportedly sustained injuries but was treated and has been released.

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the collision as a criminal incident, according to the news release. At this time there is no physical description of the unidentified man, his clothing or ski bike.

Under the Colorado Skier Safety Act, no skier involved in a collision with another person that results in injury shall leave the vicinity of the collision before giving their name and current address to an employee or ski patroller. The only exception is if the skier leaves the scene to help secure aid for an injured person.

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has any information to contact the Summit County 911 Center at 970-668-8600.
