Hitchhiker arrested after attempted robbery

SUMMIT COUNTY – The free ride wasn’t good enough, and the hitchhiker demanded the driver’s wallet, too. But the robbery didn’t go quite as planned, and police caught the perpetrator hitchhiking again later that day.

Park County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Teddy Wayne Bennett, 46, July 5. Bennett remains in custody in the Summit County Jail and is charged with felony menacing and attempted armed robbery.

According to a statement from the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, Bennett was hitchhiking in Summit County and was picked up by a motorist on Swan Mountain Road near Windy Point. Bennett then reportedly pulled a knife on the driver and demanded his wallet. The driver stopped the car, walked around to the passenger side and threw the hitchhiker out, according to the sheriff’s office statement. The driver then went to work and called police.

Park County deputies apprehended Bennett later on Highway 9. He was taken to the Summit County Jail, where the driver in the attempted robbery identified him in a photo lineup.

Bennett is scheduled for a preliminary court appearance July 23.
