Housing would help hurricane victims

This is an open letter to Vail Resorts, Intrawest and the many second and rental homeowners in the beautiful high country of Colorado. After watching, in horror, the plight of so many Americans for the last three weeks, I wondered what our community could do to help. The answer seemed so obvious. Housing! We have many, many homes and condos that sit vacant for the majority of the year. So here is my idea. How about offering a family (or two) that has been displaced by Hurricane Katrina, housing for a year, or at least through the next ski season. Imagine how a year without housing payments could help someone overcome such catastrophic losses. Our community offers a good possibility of employment for these people and reliable free transportation. It would be a blessing to all of us. Think of the good publicity you would receive from offering, as a place to start over, one of the usually vacant condo’s that fill our communities. I’m sure the lost revenue could even be tax deductible. So come on all you local corporate guys and truly offer something of value: A new home and a good start on rebuilding a life. Colorado just received 1,000 more people displaced by our nations greatest natural disaster. Let’s show them that we are not just a place for the rich to play, but that we are all Americans in this together, whatever the altitude.
