How about a high-deductible health plan?

Jessica MillerLeadville

I am writing in response to the March 26 letter, “Not the government’s job to care for us.” I partially agree with that letter. As someone who tries to live a healthy lifestyle and understands that the common cold is just part of being human, I do not want my tax dollars to pay for people who make unhealthy choices or run to the doctor for every common ailment. There should be some personal accountability for health care; that way it will be less likely to be abused.Unfortunately, not everybody has the privilege of being able to purchase a health care plan. I am an uninsured, young, healthy, long-distance runner. I cannot find a company that will sell me a personal health care plan because I have a congenital heart defect that has never caused me any problems and very possibly never will.I do not quality for Cover Colorado because I am not a resident, and I do not qualify for federal programs because I make too much money, am too young or am too old. I have money saved to protect myself in the case of an emergency, but there are some procedures that very few of us could ever afford on our own.I have fallen through the cracks. Until health care companies become equal opportunity, I would like to see a federal high-deductible plan to protect people like me in emergencies.I hope that I will soon get a job with a group health plan that will cover me or that I will meet the residency requirements for Cover Colorado. Until then, all I can do is pray that nothing bad happens.
