Huge boulder blocks U.S. 285 southbound

MORRISON – Colorado state highway crews are working to clear a 60-ton boulder from a highway on the far western edge of the Denver area.

Colorado Department of Transportation spokeswoman Mindy Crane says the southbound lanes of U.S. 285 near Indian Hills are closed. She says crews will have to blast the boulder into smaller parts to clear the highway.

The boulder rolled down the hillside onto the road at about 6 p.m. Friday. Crane says the heavy rains could have dislodged it, but the cause won’t be clear until the highway department’s experts look at the site.

Crane says the highway likely won’t reopen until sometime Saturday.
