Hunter rescued near Fremont Pass

FREMONT PASS – The Summit County Search and Rescue (SAR) team rescued an out-of-state hunter following an ATV accident Thursday afternoon off Highway 91 near the Climax Molybdenum Mine.SAR public information officer Mike Schmitt said the man and two other hunters were scouting the area on ATV’s around 4:30 p.m. when the victim wrecked and was thrown off the four-wheeler.Schmitt said he’s not sure what the circumstances of the accident were, but said the man was critically injured and had to be airlifted by Flight For Life to St. Anthony Central hospital in Denver.Schmitt said one of the victim’s friends rode out to the Climax mine office and called for help. Rescuers then followed the friend on ATV’s to the accident scene about five miles off the highway. He said the victim was conscious when rescuers found him and were able to stabilize the man, then bring him about halfway out of the woods to a better landing area for the helicopter.Schmitt is not sure of the hunter’s current condition, but said he had improved by the time the helicopter took off. Schmitt said the victim has been hunting for four seasons and is familiar with the area.
