I-70 chain-up station project wins award

DAILY NEWS STAFF REPORT

A $2.8 million project improving many vehicle chain-up stations along Interstate 70 west of Denver received a 2010 Colorado Contractors Association and Colorado Department of Transportation Project Management award this month.

“Because the project was completed on time, new lighting systems were available during the winter season, allowing truckers to easily identify the chain-up stations and to safely chain up when they got there,” according to a CDOT press release.

Critical components to the project included “caisson drilling, direction boring, erection of overhead light structures and hanging conduit over a gorge five stories high were all completed with a perfect safety record,” according to the press release.

The lights installed were shielded to minimize light pollution, and they are controlled remotely so as to only be activated during storm events.

The awards organization has been presented cooperatively by CCA and CDOT for the past 26 years.
