8:45 p.m.: The eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 have reopened at Exit 205 following a closure for safety concerns. Colorado Highway 9 over Hoosier Pass also reopened following a closure for a stalled vehicle.
6 p.m.: Interstate 70 eastbound is closed at Exit 205 for “safety concerns,” according to CoTrip.org.
While roads are clear in the valley, higher elevations like the stretch of I-70 near the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels is experiencing icy roadways, according to traffic cameras in the area.
The closure is causing a traffic jam in the eastbound lanes of the interstate and another backup near the tunnels themselves, according to traffic cameras. The backup on eastbound I-70 at Exit 205 is causing delays as people trying to head toward Denver are diverted onto Colorado Highway 9 in Silverthorne and U.S. Highway 6 through Dillon and over Loveland Pass.
Snowfall is expected to continue through the weekend, prompting a warning about how the freeze-thaw-cycle might lead to icy roadways and traffic issues, especially once the sun sets.
Heavy traffic was reported on westbound Interstate 70 near Stevens Gulch, and road conditions are more icy on the east side of the tunnels, according to traffic cameras.
