I-70 lanes to close Wednesday

SPECIAL TO THE DAILY

IDAHO SPRINGS – Commuters and travelers will face daytime lane closures on Interstate 70 in Clear Creek County starting Wednesday as the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) works to complete a repaving project.CDOT is changing from a nighttime work schedule because cooler evening temperatures are beginning to affect construction activities. The switch will last until the project is finished in mid-October.Single lane closures will be in place on eastbound and/or westbound I-70 between the Hidden Valley and Fall River Road interchanges from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays. However, Friday work hours may be extended on eastbound I-70 if traffic volumes remain low. Drivers should anticipate some delays. A 45 mph speed limit remains in effect through the work zone.Lane closures will be limited in length to two miles or less but officials said the necessity to complete the project before adverse weather arrives may require more than one lane closure to be in place within the work zone. CDOT officials said they will closely monitor traffic counts and will cease work that requires lane closures if extensive traffic backups occur – unless completion of the work is necessary to maintain highway safety. Remaining construction includes bridge paving, guardrail and barrier work, and placing new rumble strips, signing and striping.
