Ian Quandt: Traffic signal better than another roundabout in Breck

Ian Quandt

Something must be done. Why? Because every time I try to pull out of my neighborhood I am nearly killed trying to cross a busy highway. I live in the Silver Shekel neighborhood, and I know something needs to be done to remedy the problem. The Town of Breckenridge, in its wisdom, has come up with a plan: putting in a roundabout. Now I am willing to listen to the ideas of the town, but this one is a bit on the side of insanity. There are three major reasons why.

First, it would inconvenience people trying to turn left into the neighborhood. Second, it would only serve to increase traffic in the area, as the roundabout would be an arbitrary obstacle on the road. Third, it would make usage of the bus stops unsafe. It is hard enough to cross the highway to get to the bus stop as it is, and making a roundabout would make it nearly impossible to walk across the road, while putting in a traffic light would increase the safety of it. So, here is what I propose: the town installs a traffic light at the intersection of Highway 9 and Fairview Blvd – a cheaper, more efficient and more safe means of resolving the issue than a roundabout.

Editor’s note: Engineers with the Colorado Department of Transportation have cited safety as a reason to support roundabouts over traffic signals, as roundabouts statistically result in fewer fatal wrecks and reduce points of conflict between pedestrians and vehicles.
