SUMMIT COUNTY – The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services picked up nine illegal immigrants from Summit County after their van broke down Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 70 at about milemarker 210.Colorado State Patrol responded to the broken down vehicle, which was in the westbound lanes about three miles from the Eisenhower Tunnel, said CSP Trooper Lloyd Smith.Five of the passengers were minors, some were infants and toddlers, and everyone was dressed in short-sleeved T-shirts, said CSP Trooper Lloyd Smith.Because none of the passengers had any money for a tow truck, they were transported to the nearest safe place – the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.”Regardless of who we find on the road, whether they’re U.S. citizens or illegal immigrants, we always find a way for them to get somewhere safe,” Smith said. The group was apparently heading to Virginia from Mexico.Smith said immigration services does not pick up illegal immigrants unless they’re stranded, as in this situation. As a policy, CSP notifies immigration when they encounter illegal immigrants, Smith said.
