In praise of Captain Westcott

Thane Wright

Otherwise known as “Westy,” I refer to Jeff as Captain Westcott for his consistent work ethic, mastery on the microphone, and his thorough, systematic approach to his profession of race promotions.

The first race in which I ever competed in Summit County became one of Jeff’s races, the Fall Classic, when Ranjeet Grewal ” the younger brother of Alexi and Rishi ” was in the field. That was September 1990.

Since then I have enjoyed many of the pleasures of our great community and outdoor playground. The opportunity provided by Jeff’s races is near the top of my list. To be able to gather every other Wednesday afternoon throughout the summer with 200 of my fellow cycling friends for a well organized, accurately timed and scored race that takes me on a different exciting course each time is a real blessing. For a measly 20 bucks, we get our names announced over the PA system, we get an awards ceremony with free beer, we get a marshaled and well-marked race course, we get up to date maps, information, start times and course pre-riding instructions. Not to mention series rankings, team rankings, and end of season custom awards with photos of us racing! The level of execution is national caliber, and yet here it is in our backyard, with my friends, every other week!

Thank you Captain for providing the wonderful opportunity to do what I love to do here in Summit County. I am grateful for all the years of terrific races you’ve provided us and indebted to you for the cherished memories of so many moments racing with my friends.
