4 p.m. Tuesday: Traffic is heavy and slow moving on Colorado Highway 9 over Hoosier Pass as motorists report multiple slide-offs and stalled vehicles that are ill-equipped for the icy conditions.
Member of the Facebook group Hoosier Passers have reported at least three vehicles that have crashed or slid off the roadway this afternoon, including video of an SUV that was fishtailing as it tried to make it up and over the Pass.
Photographs and video footage show icy, snow-packed conditions as a storm is expected to dump up to 10 inches of powder across the region amid a winter weather advisory. CoTrip.org isn’t reporting any closures or delays, but members of the group say anyone going over the pass should take caution and make sure their vehicle is properly equipped to deal with the poor conditions.
The winter weather advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Wednesday, March 19.

2:30 p.m. Tuesday: Interstate 70 has opened over Vail Pass and near Exit 205 in Silverthorne following brief closures due to a storm that prompted a winter weather advisory.
A stalled semi-tractor trailer caused a one-lane closure of eastbound traffic east of Exit 205, while Vail Pass was closed in the westbound direction for “safety concerns.”
The advisory calls for up to 10 inches of snowfall between Tuesday, March 18, and Wednesday at 6 a.m., noting that “travel could be very difficult,” due to strong winds and heavy snowfall, creating low visibility and slippery roadway surfaces.
Traction laws for passenger vehicles are in effect, requiring four-wheel drive with all-weather or snow tires for any vehicle. Vehicles with two-wheel drive must have snow tires or traction devices when traction laws are in effect.
Commercial vehicles must comply with the state’s tire chain laws, which are in effect until late spring.
Failure to comply with traction or tire chain laws results in hefty fines.
