Is civility dead?

Charles Pitman, Silverthorne

Whatever happened to rational political discourse? It certainly does not appear to be operating in Summit County or even, from what I see, the country. The vitriolic nature of many letters to the editor offers only puerile comments affirming nothing substantive or rational.Nasty or pejorative comments serve no useful purpose and only make arguments look especially weak.H.L. Mencken said that he never tried to change someone’s mind, stating, “A convert to a good idea is simply a man who confesses that he was formerly an ass – and is probably one still.” Some letters to the editor offer massive proof that, even in the midst of what seems to be civilization, Neanderthal man is with us still (with further apologies to Mencken). Is civility dead?
