‘It’s your move’
Free real estate manuals available for Colorado high school educatorsBY THETEAM@ELICH.COMEleventh- and 12th-grade educators can now get free real estate manuals that teach lessons on finding an apartment, rental agreements, tenant responsibilities, types of housing, buying and selling a home, types of loans, taxes and insurance, and much more. The program, sponsored by the Colorado Association of Realtors (CAR) Education Foundation, is called “It’s Your Move” (IYM) and is free to educators, including shipping and handling. IYM has caused a great deal of interest so far, and it will continue to be a valuable resource to high school students who are about to venture out into college or the workforce.Tyrone Adams, Communications Director of the Colorado Association of Realtors states, “IYM has been a great success, in that over 20,000 high school students in Colorado have been exposed to the program. The program is comprehensive; it provides great information about what one can or can’t do in regard to renting and/or buying a home. It spells out what your rights are.” Parents of students have said they wish there had been a program like IYM when they were young and went off to college. They admit they knew nothing about renting, home ownership or credit, and by learning about what credit means and its long term effect, kids are in a much better situation when it comes time to rent and/or buy.The IYM program lasts between three and six weeks (depending on the educators’ use of outside speakers and projects) and is typically hosted in social studies, independent living, business education, home economics and/or consumer math courses. Educators can get the “It’s Your Move” manuals by calling the nearest local real estate association/board.The Colorado Association of Realtors Education Foundation is one of several foundations that CAR administers for the benefit of homebuyers throughout the state.WELCOME HOME! is compiled each week by the TheTeam@ELICH.COM.
