James Dickinson: Taking our land away

As much as I appreciate County Commissioner Karn Stiegelmeier’s zeal, she is attempting to enact legislation to further her own agenda while neglecting the needs of her constituency. Throughout her career, her ideals have been that the best/only use of shared public space should be non-motorized. This is something we cannot allow our current BOCC to push through. There are approximately 1,400 registered OHV users that live in Summit County. If one of our two legal places to ride is shut down, it will create issues with overcrowding, which in turn will affect safety. If our designated area by the landfill, shooting range and electrical substation is taken away, where do we go? Currently people who oppose motorized use can choose any number of spots to enjoy besides the Dillon landfill. If you displace us, we will be forced to find other areas – maybe closer to your favorite “peaceful” spot. USFS land is designated for diverse use and although some of the land in question is county land, we need a managed, legal place to ride locally. Our commissioners should stop and think about what they are taking away from our county, our kids, my friends and I.

“It just needed to be done” – is that really a legitimate reason? Or is it the BOCC’s version of “because I said so?”

On a side note, the BOCC also backs the “Hidden Gems” Wilderness Area proposal, which would close current mountain bike trails. What’s next, no hiking? We should all come together to make sure we can use OUR land for what we love.
