James Melvin still in critical condition

SILVERTHORNE – Silverthorne resident James Melvin, seriously injured in an early Sunday car crash, is stable but still in critical condition at St. Anthony’s Central Hospital, according to his brother.

Eric Melvin said James is on full life support. Surgery to reconstruct his shattered femur has already taken place. Shoulder surgery planned for Friday has been postponed because Melvin’s voluntary breathing is recovering slowly and because of lung damage and excess internal bleeding in his shoulder.

James, 37, is a lifelong county resident who works as a mechanic for the town of Silverthorne. His 1990 Eagle Talon collided with a state highway department front-end loader at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday on westbound Interstate 70 near Silver Plume. During the crash, Melvin’s arm, femur, tibia and shoulder were shattered, and a lung collapsed.

James Melvin, a Summit High School graduate, also directs the county’s Little Tigers Pee Wee wrestling program, and is assistant coach of the Summit High School wrestling team.

More details on his condition will be provided as the family receives them.

The Melvin family asks friends call (970) 485-0333 before visiting James in the hospital.

“We would like to thank everyone for their kindness, patience, support and encouragement through this time of uncertainty and hope,” Eric Melvin wrote.
