Jana L Waters: Burro Trail tree markings a disgrace

Jana L Waters

While on my daily walk, I was dismayed to come upon a section of trees on the Burro Trail marred by garish blue paint, splotches of circles and arrows. Initially, I was saddened to think that this was an act perpetrated by a posse of tree-hating, paint-wielding vandals but was horrified to learn that it was actually the responsibility of the organizers of a recent marathon.

Do these folks think that the runners in their event are so geographically challenged as to require blue signs on every third tree? I am sure that a few appropriately placed volunteers would have eliminated any confusion.

Editor’s note: According to Jeff Westcott, organizer of the Breck Crest Marathon, they marked the course with orange squares and pink flagging tape, all of which was removed immediately after the event. The blue marks, Westcott believes, may have been placed on the trees by Warrior’s Mark resident or residents looking to mark the route to the ski area.
