Jeanne Marie Leach: Health insurance mandate unfair

Jeanne Marie Leach
Frisco

My husband, an ex-subprime mortgage broker lost his job 19 months ago. We have no health insurance, and have been living off my salary of $14,000 per year since then. We barter for our rent and paid off our car two years ago, so we’re able to get by.

We have never, nor do we wish to live off government handouts.

Our government is planning to mandate that I pay for health insurance or pay a hefty fine!

How do they propose that someone who cannot afford to buy groceries pay for “affordable health insurance” or pay a fine of $1,000? That’s what the senate is proposing as reported in the Denver Post.

This will cause the poor to simply stop getting the care they need, which could cause serious injuries or even death.

I know this because I personally had no choice but to go through the pain and agony of a kidney stone at home, with no drugs or doctor to make sure I was OK. Thank God the stone was small enough for me to pass. If it hadn’t been, well, I may not be here today to write this letter.

If our government truly cared about the poor, then how can they arbitrarily decide to mandate health insurance? Oh yeah, when you have the best health care plan in America available exclusively for life for senators, I guess it’s not easy to fathom a family in small-town America living off $14,000 a year.

This is the most horrible piece of legislation to come through the government since the stimulus package and has the potential to ruin families.

Please, somebody stop the madness!

Will you please consider writing to our senators, Udall and Bennett and ask them to not vote for mandated health insurance and subsequent fines?
