Jerry Weiss: Health care must change

If you think we don’t need health insurance reform, think again. Even if you have insurance you might lose it if you move, change jobs or lose your jobs – or your insurance company might cancel your plan when you get sick. Think about it: Get sick, lose your job, then try to get insurance to cover your illness – you can’t! Or if you can, you’ll go broke trying to pay for either the insurance or the health care you need. This is obscene and it must end NOW. Under the president’s plan, it will be against the law for insurance companies to:

• Deny coverage based on a preexisting condition.

• Drop or weaken coverage when you get sick.

• Place a cap on the amount of coverage you can receive in a given year or a lifetime.

It won’t create “death panels” and it won’t get between you and your doctor – like the current insurance system does by denying coverage your doctor thinks is needed. It won’t give coverage to “illegals” or any of the other scare tactics the Republicans and right-wing commentators are using to prevent progress on health care.

The U.S. is the only industrialized country that doesn’t have some form of government-sponsored health insurance, and we all suffer for it – and yet we spend more per capita on health care than anyone else. It makes no sense and must change now
