Jim and Annie Halpin: Great local health care

Jim and Annie Halpin

Health care arguments rage nationally; but locally, we can gratefully celebrate our access to world-class medical providers. Our gorgeous region attracts the best of the best, like our talented surgeons at Vail/Summit Orthopaedics, along with the exceptional doctors, nurses and specialized technicians who staff the E.R., O.R. and I.C.U. at St. Anthony’s Summit Medical Center. We give them all our heartiest thanks and praise!

Last February, my strong, athletic husband took a minor fall off his snowmobile but experienced terrifying moments of quadriplegia out of proportion to the mechanism of injury. He was quickly moving again, but E.R. doc Ben Perry discovered a time bomb ticking in Jim’s neck. A narrowing – born of genetics and hard work – formed an hourglass-shaped crimping of his spinal cord at C-5-6.

Enter Vail/Summit Ortho’s Greg Poulter, M.D., a brilliant young surgeon whose specialties include laminoplasty, a sophisticated way of relieving stenosis without a fusion that may compromise adjacent discs and range of motion. Luckily, Jim was a candidate for this procedure. Dr. Poulter finessed the delicate surgery in a long operation, including state-of-the-art precautions and extra techniques that prevented all of the scary complications that sometimes follow laminoplasty. Jim has no deficits and can play again with vigor. We think Dr. Poulter walks on water!

Everyone who worked with us was a warm and expert professional. St. A’s beautiful Summit hospital exceeds all expectations. The ICU nursing staff treated us like family, and even allowed our well-behaved dogs to visit, which meant a lot to Jim and even more to the dogs. We could not have had a better experience anywhere on the planet. We thank our fantastic American medical providers. Their timely intervention prevented a potentially disastrous outcome.
