John Catrambone: Summit County not a pro pet community

I dare say Summit County is not a pet-friendly community. People here do demonstrate great love for their pets on many levels. But on others, the area is lacking in action to do more for pet-owning citizens and pets alike.

Summit County Animal Shelter needs to become a no-kill shelter. People will say there is no other way; but many shelters are no-kill and it proves it can be done. A community of loving pet owners shouldn’t stand for an animal care facility funded by their tax dollars that kills healthy, adoptable pets. Summit County needs a low-cost neuter/spay program. It may save money in the long run by having fewer unwanted pets to manage. If the community were a pet-loving community, people would demand a change.

In a pet-loving community, supply and demand would dictate that landlords would have to allow pets. Owners would demand HOAs to allow tenants to have pets. Culturally, it would be unacceptable to disallow pets in a pet-friendly community.

Pet owners often show a lack of care and responsibility. This is not unique to this area; but in a place that has the image of being pet-loving and forward thinking, it’s disgraceful. Leaving pets in cars for long times is cruel, leaving pets off leash to roam may seem good, but is actually not. Allowing their pets’ waste to be deposited on others’ property, public property, and not be properly disposed of, do much to harm the community’s acceptance and image of pet owners.

Summit County’s Animal Shelter and rental market are grossly contradictory to being a pet-loving community. Change the shelter now.
