Join Meatless Monday on March 20

Harriet Balhiser, Frisco

Please think about joining the other Americans who will be choosing a meatless menu on Saturday. The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is promoting Meatless Monday to help reduce heart disease, stroke and cancer. Evidence suggests that a well-balanced, pure vegetarian diet is the healthiest diet a person can eat. Environmental reason to go vegetarian are many. A typical pig factory farm generates raw waste equivalent to that of a city of 12,000 people, 20,000 pounds of potatoes can be grown on one acre of land, but only 165 pounds of beef can be produced in the same space. The amount of water used in the production of the average steer could float a destroyer and 55 square feet of land is consumed for every quarter-pound fast-food burger made of rain forest beef.Animals are very much a part of Summit County and we pride ourselves on showing them kindness. Unfortunately for the factory farm animals, they are treated like economic units. About 10 billion of them are raised, transported and slaughtered in the United States each year. Please join me in expanding your circle of compassion to include the farm animals this Saturday.
