Juliana Maes: Driving a bus up here no picnic

As a bus driver myself, I felt like I needed to respond. If you have never driven a bus yourself, or have never driven a really large vehicle, it’s obviously hard to understand what it’s like to drive one of these behemoths. Driving a bus for a ski resort is like driving through a gnarly obstacle course with the added stress of not being able to tell your passengers to please quiet down so you can concentrate. Maybe the bus was full and there wasn’t room for anymore passengers. Maybe it was a busy morning and the driver was giving her full concentration to pulling safely away from the busstop. Maybe she had five passengers all asking her questions at once and she was focused on providing good customer service. Maybe on the day in question it was snowing, or the bright sun was shining in her face, and visibility was poor. Or maybe the bus driver made a mistake and simply didn’t see the people walking towards the bus stop.

Our main priority is to get our passengers safely to their end destination, but there are times when we do leave people standing at the bus stop, never intending to ruin their day. I hope the woman who was upset reads this letter and goes away a bit more knowledgeable about what it’s like to be a ski resort bus driver, and that the next time she’s on a bus has some appreciation for the employees who drive our high altitude winter obstacle courses.
