Karolyn Pierson: Keystone Parkway could use sprucing up

Karolyn Pierson

A few objective comments (I hope) on the Keystone Parkway improvement proposal from a person who does not live in Keystone and who won’t be paying if this project is approved. I am writing today because I have great respect for those who advocate thoughtful community improvement projects.

As a frequent user of Highway 6 and visitor to Keystone friends and patron of Keystone businesses, I would posit that the highway currently presents an average but, not compelling impression of Keystone. The message for me and undoubtedly thousands of others passing through is: “Looks OK but nothing special!” My Silverthorne community, for example, does a superb job of maintaining attractive highway medians and roadsides as we seek commercial customers. I appreciate the beauty it presents not only to me but to others visiting our wonderful mountain country.

As time goes on, buildings on either side of the Keystone highway are aging and as such could use some help to add spark and attraction. This is especially true for those just passing though; missing an opportunity for a lasting very positive impression of Keystone as a community and a business center and perhaps a return visit.

I fully appreciate that times are more economically difficult and taxpayers are careful about spending. But, history has shown that such times represent the best values and that those who capitalize on such opportunities become leaders as conditions improve. This issue is very much like philosophies on home or business ownership – should I spend a little every year to maintain and improve appearance or should I let it slide and then have to spend a bundle when it is time to sell?
