Kathleen B. Allison: U.S. education system broken

Kathleen B. Allison
Evergreen and Breckenridge

Mr. Gleason’s letter is a perfect example of why the U.S. educational system needs an overhaul.

When studies show that the U.S. is lagging behind most of the rest of the world in educational achievement (We’re 31! We’re 31!!) it boggles the mind that one would not insist on examining our standards of teacher qualification, educational content, parental involvement and student dedication.

The “profit” we must demand is an educated child who will be self-sufficient, self-directed and ethical. If this means privatizing education or shifting to more charter schools, then so be it. The system as it stands today is not getting the job done. Shame on U.S. education – but shame on us for putting up with it!
