Kay Nicholas: Unnecessary bag

Kay Nicholas

On Sunday, to pass the time as I drank my hot drink, I borrowed a Summit Daily from the closest table to me. As I picked it up I quickly noticed it to be bulkier than the usual ad and coupon-filled Sunday editions. Lo and behold, there was a big, brown paper bag neatly folded into the center of this paper and, I could only assume, every other copy across the county that Sunday morning.

As it turned out, this was some chain-store’s marketing attempt to lure shoppers to their store. All I could think was, “What a terrible waste!” We are living in an age where we ought to be drastically cutting back on our waste, and one of the best starts for this is to opt for reusable bags as opposed to the single-use plastic and brown bags supplied at every store. For each brown bag that was stuffed into the middle of this past Sunday’s Daily, each one of them has canceled out the efforts made by any of us who bypass the convenience of single-use bags and instead bring our own reusable bags along with us to do our shopping.

How, in good conscience, could one think that this would be a good advertising strategy? Then that begs the question, how, in good conscience, could a local newspaper accommodate such a wasteful advertising strategy? And by the way, aren’t we in the midst of some kind of a “friendly” challenge amongst other resort towns to try and promote the use of reusable bags by tallying which county has the most shoppers bringing in their own bags when visiting participating stores? Maybe we should get a deduction for every brown bag that was thoughtlessly sandwiched into the middle of he Summit Daily on Sunday.
