Rafters found a kayaker, believed to be a Summit County local, dead in the Blue River north of Silverthorne Thursday afternoon, according to a statement from the Summit County Coroner’s Office.

The man, who has not yet been positively identified, was found face down in the water near the “Pipeline” just south of the Columbine takeout. Rafters, who claimed to have seen the man kayaking and wearing a helmet and life vest just moments before, pulled him out of the water and attempted CPR, Coroner Joanne Richardson stated in the release.

It is suspected the man drowned, but because no one saw what happened, Richardson said she is not ruling out a medical event as the cause of death and is ordering an autopsy.

This story will be updated.
