Keystone fireworks show nixed

Summit County, CO Colorado

KEYSTONE ” After consulting morning fire weather projections and working directly with the fireworks operators and Vail Resorts personnel, Lake Dillon Fire-Rescue Chief Dave Parmley withdrew authorization for the Keystone Resort fireworks show scheduled for July 4, 2007 due to the “very high” wildfire risk in the High Country.

“At this time, under current conditions, the Keystone Fireworks show planned for the evening of July 4, 2007, is cancelled. However, if we receive appreciable rainfall, that status will be reconsidered,” said Chief Parmley.

Since fireworks in the Frisco area are set off directly over Lake Dillon, the Frisco Fireworks Show is still on schedule. “The ability to get fireworks out over the water dramatically reduces the risk associated with falling embers and sparks,” adds Chief Parmley.

The fire risk in Summit County remains at “very high,” although the lack of moisture, the abundance of fuels and the continued dry weather projections suggest a move to “extreme” fire risk may be on the horizon.
