Kurt Kunkle: Fire and Hidden Gems

Thanks Trish for bringing up these important questions. They are shared by many and I took them very seriously. So here’s what we have done to answer them:

We consulted the expert and professional members of the Summit County Wildfire Council. They helped re-map the areas so lands needing fuel mitigation, watershed protection and fire breaks etc. are outside of the proposed wilderness areas.

As a result, the boundaries for Hoosier Ridge and Tenmile proposed wilderness areas are near tree line. The majority of forested areas in the upper Blue River valley are outside of the proposed wilderness areas. In other words, the majority of the areas in Hoosier Ridge and Tenmile wilderness proposals are alpine tundra and do not need treatment. If the remaining trees in the proposed areas are identified by the experts as needing treatment to protect homes, people and water, then we will work with them to make that happen.

Wilderness or no wilderness there is potential for wildfire. Protecting your property and loved ones from wildfire starts at home with creating defensible space. Defensible space insures that firefighters can safely defend your house if a wildfire burns through the area. Spend your energy helping your neighbors create defensible space around their homes.

I refer you to a recent article in the May 22 Daily: “Summit Wildfire Council OK with Hidden Gems proposal.”
