Immigrant protections

Colorado has positioned itself as one of the strongest states in the country for immigrant protections, which a proposed bill would expand. Under a proposed bill, municipalities, counties, boards, commissions, and the state’s judicial and legislative branches would be barred from providing personal information to federal officials unless presented with a valid warrant. Restrictions on data sharing would also include information related to student visa sponsorships and financial aid for higher education. The bill also seeks to limit deportations in sensitive spaces like schools, hospitals and child care centers.

Coach arrested

Team Summit has fired a coach after his arrest on charges related to a report that a juvenile was sexually assaulted during a ski competition in Taos, New Mexico, according to a statement from the team. The Taos County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that deputies arrested Jared Hedges, 48, of Frisco, at Taos Ski Valley on March 22 on felony charges of criminal sexual penetration of a minor and criminal sexual contact.

Developer protections

The Colorado House recently passed a bill aimed at incentivizing more condominium development by reducing the risk of lawsuits against builders. Proponents point to the rapid loss of condo developers in Colorado — 84% between 2007 and 2022 — as a potential reason for the state’s escalating cost of housing. Condos are often seen as an affordable option for buyers looking to break into the housing market, but prices have been steadily increasing for years, something lawmakers hope the bill will help address.
