Deportation threat
In her opening speech of the 2025 Colorado legislative session, re-elected Colorado House Speaker Julie McCluskie, who is from Dillon, said, “Coloradans do not support mass deportations,” framing the proposal as one that would devastate communities and local economies. McCluskie did not mention specific policies the legislature may try to pass in response to a Trump White House but said Colorado will remain “a safe haven from attacks on reproductive rights, voting rights, workers’ rights, LGBTQ rights, personal liberty and civil rights.”
New coffee shop owner
Cristian Salas and his partner Anna Hernandez said it’s tough to spend a morning anywhere in Mexico and find someone not drinking coffee, which plays a significant role in the culture. It was Salas’ father and his love for coffee that led the two second-generation immigrants to their newest business venture: buying House of Vibes Coffee and Curio. They said people can expect cafe de olla, a Mexican classic, to be added to the menu in addition to a few varieties of carajillo, a Spanish-style alcoholic coffee beverage. The shop is located in Silverthorne.
Egg shortages
This month, Colorado’s cage-free egg law went into effect, requiring that all eggs sold in the state come from free-roaming hens. However, as the law hit, producers in Colorado and the country were hit by avian flu, leading to egg shortages and rising prices. Many poultry producers hit by the virus saw 98% of their flocks die within 48 hours once infected. The Colorado outbreak peaked in July and August but has continued to have impacts.
