Tunnel operations
Every day, tens of thousands of drivers pass through the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels on Interstate 70. The tunnels cross the Continental Divide, traverse steep mountains and are flanked by avalanche paths, making winter a formidable opponent. But the Colorado Department of Transportation recently invested $12 million to upgrade its operations center with the goal of preventing the notorious slow-downs and closures there. For every hour the I-70 mountain corridor is closed, the transportation department estimates that the state’s economy takes an almost $2 million hit.
Medicaid uncertainty
House Republicans in Congress last month took the first step toward approving a federal budget that is all but certain to include deep cuts to Medicaid, the government-subsidized health care program used by 1 in 5 Americans. In Colorado, an estimated 1.3 million adults and children — nearly a quarter of the state’s population — are enrolled in Medicaid. The program is one of the primary funding sources for many Western Slopes clinics and hospitals.
