Forest program

Friends of the Dillon Ranger District will open applications for its Youth Forest Stewards program April 1. The program is for high school students ages 14-18 to complete trail work and educational programs during the summer. A stipend is available upon completion of the program, and one or two $1,500 scholarships will be awarded to a graduating senior attending Summit High School who has been a member of the Youth Forest Stewards crew. Apply at FDRD.org/volunteer/youth-forest-stewards

Breck housing

Breckenridge Town Council is working out financing details for the town’s “Runway Neighborhood” project, which will include about 148 units with 45 townhomes, 42 duplexes and 61 single-family homes. Initial price points for the first phase of the development put 2-bedroom townhomes at $351,000 and 3-bedroom townhomes at $450,000. The project will displace free skier parking between Airport Road and Colorado Highway 9.

Drought forecast

As winter nears its end, climatologists are predicting drought across much of the state if La Nina weather patterns continue, leading to drier and warmer conditions than normal. While drought conditions can be swayed by many factors, snowpack plays an important role as it constitutes the majority of the Colorado River’s water supply. Warmer temperatures can drive earlier snowmelt, which can lead to drought conditions.
