Lakewood officer kills pickup driver

LAKEWOOD – A police officer who feared a pickup truck driver would run over another officer who slipped on a snowpacked street killed the driver as he attempted to free the truck from snow, Lakewood police said.Police spokesman Steve Davis said Saturday the two officers have been placed on routine administrative leave, and the lone passenger in the pickup truck was arrested but had not been charged with a crime by Saturday evening.Names of the officers and the men in the truck were not immediately released.Davis said the officers were responding to a report Saturday that the men in the truck were trying to steal a trailer. The truck fled from patrol cars but got stuck in snow on a dead-end street, Davis said. One officer slipped under the truck, and the second officer fired once at the driver, who was spinning the tires and rocking the truck to try to free it from the snow, Davis said.A Jefferson County “shoot team” made up of officers from several law enforcement agencies was investigating, Davis said.
