SUMMIT COUNTY ” During a dog-bite incident, the dog may be the one doing the biting, but humans are usually to blame. And, in most cases, the incident could have been prevented by humans in the first place.

In recognition of National Dog Bite Prevention Week this week, the Summit County Animal Shelter is showing a bite-prevention video at 4 p.m. each day, Monday through Saturday.

The 30-minute video helps children and adults learn how to keep bites from happening.

Summit County Animal Shelter is located adjacent to the County Commons just south of Frisco.

When you are approached by a dog running loose without its owner

– If you’re standing, put your arms to your sides, put your feet together and be a “statue.”

– If you’re on the ground or the dog knocks you over onto the ground, become a “rock.” Curl up on your side, and cover your ears.

– Stay still, and never run or scream.

– If you have food in your hand and the dog wants it, allow the dog to take it.

– Never look a dog in the eyes, since it intimidates the dog and makes it nervous.

– Look straight ahead, wait until the dog passes, then move away slowly from the area.

– Call Summit County Animal Control at (970) 668-3230.

– Always ask the owner’s permission to pet the dog.

– Do not pet a dog on its head ” its eyes are vulnerable areas, so it’s best to pet on the side of the dog’s body.
