SUMMIT COUNTY ” Summit County library-goers may be relieved to hear that due to some creative thinking, library hours will not be affected by county budget cuts.

“I think everyone in the county is pleased about it,” said Linda Bateman, president of the Summit County Library Board.

Throughout the past few months, county departments have explored ways to trim their budgets. And as they library board did this, the only ways they found to make the budget work was to cut Sunday and evening hours at the Main Branch and reduce some of the funds for materials.

However, many library-goers voiced concerns about this. For some, the reduced hours would have meant they could not longer able to use the service.

The county heard their concerns.

County Manager Gary Martinez and county staff sat down with the library staff and were able to find creative ways to trim a budget slightly while keeping the current hours.

“We’re still taking a cut, but it’s not what we thought it would be,” Bateman said, adding that the county staff was even able to restore some of the money for materials the board thought would need to be cut.
