Light rail should be funded by those who benefit most

Daily Staff Writer

Light rail is the obvious answer to the I-70 congestion problem. What better way to travel from the airport or Denver to Vail or even Aspen, and all points in between? All the towns, ski resorts, absentee rental property owners and businesses would benefit greatly. Why should we expect the Department of Transportation to fund this project? A partnership between those who will benefit most and the state should be able to finance this project. Vail has a shortage of “affordable” million dollar condos, and perhaps the light rail would enhance property values even more. The Summit Daily editor says light rail would not be feasible for at least 10 years. Even if that is true, shouldn’t the state start the serious planning and groundwork for it now, instead of spending big money on ineffective stopgap measures?Michael ClaryBreckenridge
