Limiting mountain access a good idea

John T. ForsbergBreckenridgeSki passholder since 1986

There was an article in the Jan. 22 Summit Daily, “Local wants skier limits” about you and the Skier Safety Act. It was a good article.I certainly agree with limiting the numbers of skiers and riders during the early season when there is a limited amount of runs open. (Deer Valley in Utah does it every day.)There are several other peak times when I feel limiting the number of skiers and riders, as well as a strong enforcement stance are in order. There needs to be more strong-armed enforcement by the ski area, especially early in the season. There are simply too many out-of-control skiers and riders on the slopes in general today.I believe it is totally up to the ski areas to gain control over their out-of-control skiers and riders. There was a time when skiers tended to police their own.Snowboarders never learned this concept, since the “cool to be rude, dude” attitude prevails, and they have the ability to get “skilled” relatively quickly. When I learned how to ski, skiing was a skill that took a lot of time and practice and more than a few tips from good skiers, not to mention a couple of lessons.Today, someone can learn to snowboard and be reasonably good in a couple of days. They seem to miss getting any lessons on mountain etiquette.I find it amazing that Roger McCarthy can’t find any correlation between the number of collisions and skier and rider density. Could it be financial and legal matters clouding his judgment? I wonder if Roger would have even considered skiing himself on that Friday before Thanksgiving.
