Liquid de-icer may make Dowd Junction safer

VAIL DAILY STAFF REPORT

EAGLE COUNTY – Dowd Junction is getting de-iced.In August, crews began installing an automatic de-icing system in the Dowd Junction bridge. The system can detect when conditions are ripe for ice and will spray liquid de-icer on the curvy, dangerous road. Three sensor pucks are in the road. The pucks send information about weather conditions to a computer. When the weather gets cold or humid enough to produce ice, the sprayers will activate, squirting potassium acetate across the road. Unlike magnesium chloride, this de-icing formula won’t damage cars, Powers said. The point is to prevent ice from forming, Nall added. Drivers may be a bit surprised when they see this at first. However, the sprayers won’t squirt fluid high enough to hit the side of a car, Powers said.
