Liquor store owners don’t want Legislature to allow Sunday sales

Tuesday morning, I about choked on my coffee when I read the story on SB05-077, which would allow local governments to decide whether to allow Sunday liquor sales. Keep in mind that this is just the first step. Thanks to a lot of Front Range liquor store owners, the bill was pulled from consideration.Sen. Jennifer Veiga from Denver is sponsoring the bill. She has said opposition to the change is stronger in metro Denver than the rest of the state, saying that liquor store owners in resort towns support this bill. She is far from right! Being an owner myself, I’m completely against this bill ever passing. Sen. Veiga should do some more research before she speaks for the rest of the state. I conducted a survey myself and called about 27 liquor stores in Summit, Eagle and Lake counties. The result was a 2:1 margin against this bill. These counties are right in the middle of ski areas. I think Sen. Veiga needs to wake up and smell the coffee. She goes on to say that she has no intention of expanding the law to allow supermarkets and big box stores to sell alcohol. Who is she trying to fool? This bill would be like opening a can of worms. The ma and pa stores will go out of business because supermarkets and discount retailers such as Wal-Mart will force lawmakers to pass laws to sell beer, wine and alcohol.
