A 32-year old man who fell from the Ruby Express chairlift Dec. 11 in Keystone died May 2.
Donovan Romero died at home in hospice care with his family in Littleton, according to the Summit County Coroner’s Office.
The Coroner’s Office wrote in an email to Summit Daily that Romero’s death was ruled an accident and was caused by traumatic brain compression without herniation, due to blunt force trauma.
Romero wore a helmet the day he fell about 47 feet off the chairlift, according to previous Summit Daily reporting. A Colorado Passenger Tramway Safety Board incident report stated Romero did not have the safety bar down and momentarily hung onto the chair’s armrest before falling.
A witness said Romero was adjusting his bindings when he fell, according to the safety board report. The safety board said on May 12 that it did not conduct a further investigation since state law requires it to do so only if the incident is related to a possible malfunction of the chairlift. The incident report stated that 100% of carriers were inspected and were “all good.”
No autopsy was performed on Romero, the coroner’s office wrote, because he was hospitalized for nearly five months, and medical records and doctor’s notes indicate a clear cause of death.
Shannon Buhler, Keystone Resort’s vice president and general manager, provided a quote via email to Summit Daily.
“Keystone Resort and the entire Vail Resorts family extend our deepest sympathy and support to our guest’s family and friends,” Buhler’s quote read.
