Local group prepares for trip to Gulf Coast

A collection and fundraiser for Hurricane Katrina victims will be held Sunday in the Frisco Wal-Mart parking lot from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for a communitywide effort that will culminate in a trip south to the Gulf Coast in the Big Red Bus to distribute items and care to those in need.Groups sponsoring the trip will collect cash donations for fuel and other expenses, plus specific items needed in the disaster area:• New clothing in all sizes for men, women and children (no used clothing)• New toys (no battery-operated or large toys)• New stuffed animals• Sports drinks• Diapers• Baby bottles• Baby formula• Non-perishable food itemsThe Big Red Bus will be at the Sunday event with inflatables set up for kids to bring family fun to the collection event.The Big Red Bus and a team from sponsoring churches plan to leave Summit County for the Gulf Coast Oct. 14, when collected items will be distributed and the Big Red Bus will set up to entertain displaced families. The group will set up a play area to include the Big Red Bus inflatables and give out sno-cones, popcorn and cotton candy in an attempt to create some distraction and fun for families affected by the storm.The group is working with the American Red Cross, Salvation Army and Southern Baptist Disaster Relief Fund, and does not yet know to which area in the region it will locate. The trip is planned for one week.The event is sponsored by High Country Church, Rocky Mountain Bible Church, Summit House Church Network, Summit County law enforcement agencies, Lake Dillon Fire Authority, the Red, White and Blue Fire District, Wal-Mart, Specialized SUV and Krystal 93.
