Local hiker dies after fall

DAILY NEWS STAFF REPORT

An unidentified man fell to his death late Wednesday afternoon near Mohawk Lake south of Breckenridge. Members of the Summit County Search and Rescue team and a Flight for Life helicopter crew were summoned to the scene, about three miles up snowpacked Spruce Creek Road, but they could not resuscitate the victim. The man was believed to be in his mid-20s and may have been living in Breckenridge, according to an initial report from Summit County Coroner Joanne Richardson. The man had been hiking with two other locals about 5 p.m. when he tumbled an estimated 100 feet, according to mission coordinator Joe Ben Slivka. Authorities did not release further details, and were trying to notify the mans relatives.
