DA’s office soliciting applicants for Charitable Contribution Fund grants

This week the 5th Judicial District Attorney’s Office started the process of selecting beneficiaries of the DA5 Charitable Contributions Fund.

The district, which spans Summit, Clear Creek, Eagle and Lake counties, accumulates annual funds as a part of its “Plea by Mail” program for those who have committed minor crimes. Those who enter a guilty plea and settle their cases by mail are required to make a $100 charitable contribution before they can begin the process.

“This program brings about $70,000 annually, and we want this money to be returned directly to the community in such a way as will benefit our towns and counties by reducing crime and bringing help and support to those who have been victimized by it,” said District Attorney Bruce Brown in a news release.

The office is asking nonprofits that work to help prevent crime in their local communities or organizations that work with crime victims to apply for a grant through the fund. Previous beneficiaries include Early Childhood Partners, Speak Up Reach Out, Summit County Advocates for Victims of Assault, D.A.R.E. and Crime Stoppers of Clear Creek County.

The DA’s office is encouraging all organizations addressing crime prevention, especially among youths, or providing support services for victims of criminal activity to apply for grant funding. Applications can be requested by contacting Wendi Rowles, financial administrator for the district attorney’s office, by email at WRowles@da5.us.

The deadline to apply is Aug. 15.
