VAIL — A wedding ring found last week on Vail Mountain is still without its owner.

A Vail Resorts lift maintenance worker was walking under Sourdough Lift and spotted it on the ground. Whether it was lost last winter or during winters past is unclear, said Liz Biebl, Vail Mountain communications director.

“It likely would have been lost in the winter, because that lift doesn’t run during the summer,” Biebl said.

It appears to be a man’s ring, and there’s an inscription inside which reads “All my love, Sue.”

There’s also a date inscribed inside the ring, but the ski company isn’t saying what it is.

“We’ve had a few incorrect guesses. We got a call just today,” Biebl said.

Sauron’s Ring?

Vail Resorts initially put the word out on social media. By Wednesday it had reached about 1 million people on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

There have been some Lord of the Rings references, Biebl said, but this is not that.

“I tried it on and nothing happened,” she said.

When people find valuable things on the mountain, during mountain cleanup or at other times, they usually turn them in, Biebl said.

“This looks like it was worn and loved. It’s a little bent,” she said.

The employee who found the ring turned it in to security. The security department then set things in motion on social media.

So far, no one has claimed the ring.
